21 days Across Tanzania

Across Tanzania – adventurous 14 or 21 days Safari to Lake Tanganyika and Mahale National park

This Safari, designed for the adventurous traveller, crosses Tanzania from the Coast to stunning Lake Tanganyika. It covers hidden gems aside the normal Tourist routes. This travel can be designed according to your time and budget from 14 to 21 days or more.

Dar es Salaam - Mikumi - Ruaha - Mufindi Highlands - Mbeya –Lake Tanganyika flight to Mahale flight back to Dar es Salaam via Mafia Island.

Day 1 arrival
You will be met at the airport at Dar es Salaam by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the Hotel of choice (ex/ Serena Hotel) with your Safari starting the following day.

Day 2 Drive Dar es Salaam - Mikumi
Depart from your hotel in Dar Es Salaam around 8.30 a.m. for Mikumi National park 4-5 hours drive from Dar Es Salaam. As it is close to the Selous ecosystem and therefore part of it, it benefits from the highest game density of the entire conservation area. The Mikumi National Park obtains a good impression of the African animal world and is suitable very well for a short visit.

As you will enter the Park on the main road you will see your first wildlife. From Mikumi National park entrance gate you will start your first game drive through the park towards the Stanley’s Kopje Camp where you will be welcomed kindly by the manager.

The big and comofrtable tents are built on stilts around a small hill (Kopje). The restaurant sits on top with an amazing view over the Mikumi flood plain.

Day 3 Mikumi
Fullday game drive in Mikumi, visiting the different pools, or a trip into the close Udzungwa National Park for a guided walk through the rainforest up to the Sanje waterfalls which offers you a view over huge cane sugar fields. Lunch can be eaten in the Lodge or on top of the waterfalls out of a picnic box.

Day 4 Drive Mikumi - Ruaha
Drive over Iringa to Ruaha NationalPark. Lunch in Iringa where you have the opportunity to visit the local market with all kind of fruits, vegetables and fishes. Arrival at Ruaha River Lodge in the evening. The spacious bungalows are situated on the shore of the great Ruaha River where all kind of wildlife is gathering for drinking.

Day 5/6 Ruaha National Park
Full day game drive safari in Ruaha National Park, starting with sunrise game drive, picnic lunch in the bush: the game viewing will concentrate along the Ruaha River Banks; and then proceed with sunset wilderness game drive. Dinner and overnight accomodation at Ruaha River Lodge. Trekking with an armed Ranger in the morning the next day. Sunset game drive in the afternoon.

Day 7 Drive Ruaha - Mufindi Highlands
Drive over Iringa to Ismailia Stone Age site for a short guidance through the discovery area and the impressive erosional pyramids. Further drive to Mufindi Highland Lodge. Arrival in the evening and enjoy the tea fields and the European like fresh climate.

Day 8 Mufindi Highland Lodge
At this place all the food for the six Fox Lodges is produced. You have the opportunity for Horse Riding, Fishing in a lake in Mufindi Highlands or a tour through the tea fields.
Day 9 Drive Mufindi - Mbeya
Drive to Mbeya. Stay at Utengule Coffee Lodge and enjoy Coffee variations from Africans best Barristas.

Day 10 Utengule Coffee Lodge
Three possibilities either Mountain trekking to one of the nicest crater lakes of Tanzania, visiting the fourth largest Iron Meteorite in Mbozi or visiting a Swiss managed Coffee Farm.

Day 11 Drive Mbeya – Tundunma - Sumbawanga - Kipili
Prepare for a long journey: Depart for a full day drive to Lake Tanganyika. During the drive you will catch many impressions of the liefstyle of the people in the villages and thee different landscapes. Lunch on the way. Arrival in the evening in the Lakeshore Lodge in Kipili. Take a refreshing bath in the clean waters of Lake Tanganyika after the tough ride and enjoy the delicious food and the warm hospitalility of the Lakeshore Lodge.

Day 12/13 Lake Tanganyika
Stay in the beautiful lakeshore Lodge and enjoy the stunning Lake Tanganyika by swimming, kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving or alternatively some hiking or and biking around the beautiful region.

Day 14 Flight Kipili Dar-es- Salaam
Flight back from Kipili to Dar es Salaam

..or stay an additional day in the Lakeshore Lodge and then proceed to Mahale National Park. This travel can easily be extended for visits to the Mahale National park, visiting famous Chimpanzee population.

Day 15 Flight Kipili - Mahale
Flight from Kipili to Mahale. If you have enough time you also can wait for the MS Liemba the former Graf von Götzen a 1st World War German Steamboat (this requires an additional two to four days depending on the boat schedule). For more then 4 pers. a speedboat transfer can be organized for the trip along the eastern coast of Lake Tanganjika.

Days 16/17 Mahale National Park
Stay 3 nights in a Lodge or Camp in Mahale allowing 3 days to partake in the areas activities such as Chimpanzee trekking and swimming and snorkelling in Lake Tanganyika. A meeting with the Chimpaanzee is a very special experience which differs a lot from encounter other monkeys.

Day 18 Flight Mahale – Mafia Island
Flight back from Mahale (via Katavi) to Mafia Island. Transfer to Butiama Beach Resort.

Day 19/20 Mafia Island
Relax and let all the many impressions from the Safari settle down at the white sandy beach of the resort or go for a snorcheling or diving trip in the Mafia Marine Park. Enjoy the seafood at dinner and fresh fruits for breakfeast.
Day 21 Flight Mafia – Dar es Salaam
Flight back to Dar es Salaam in the morning or afternoon as you wish.

The programm can easely be modified until it suits your needs.
